We're not, just the spelling. :)

Is the reason why these sort of threads are so popular on mailing
lists because computer people are naturally picky, or is that just me?

One of the reasons why Latin has such a clearly defined grammar is
because it's not getting forced to do new things in daily
conversation.  My history of language is fairly hazy here but I think
the main reason we have any grammar rules for English at all is
because scholars were used to Latin having clearly defined grammar and
decided it would be a good idea for English too.
