Michael,

It is much more than a debugger, but you should definitely give eclipse 
a shot.  Take a look at http://www.eclipse.org.  It's a very nice, open 
source IDE that supports many languages.  Java is the nearest and 
dearest to it's heart since it's developed in Java.
