FC3 can't read /etc/mtab

This is the entry for pts in my fstab.  Try adding add it to your fstab
and see what happens:
none                    /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620 0 0

It doesn't say that.  It says it sanitizes the entries that it put in
there and that those entries are  identified with the "managed" keyword.
The pts filesystem doesn't have that, whereas cdrecorder1 and floppy1
do.
