I recently had to repair a server that had partly-installed Debian on hda, RHL 
7.0 on hdb and wouldn't boot either.
My rescue disk (FC2 I think) didn't work.
Knoppix didn't work

I eventually settled on a grub floppy. Worked perfectly and I was able to make 
both bootable.

I've done it; it's fine if you're wired up.

you're in deep poo. Can't get to the manuals, gotta rescue the system with a 
boot floppy (do they still work?) (one of my system has no floppy) or CD 
(several have no CD drive, only three have burners).

Once installed grub basically works for ever. If you stuff up the menu, you 
have a commandline and some basic docs.

grub for servers.
