No DMA support

I have an AMD 64bit System with the 64bit Fedora installed.
Unfortunately, I have two issues with it.

1) Fedora does not recognise the onboard lan. I have fiddled bios
settings with plug and play os and enabled the lan etc, but to no
avail. Problem circumvented with PCI ethernet card.

2) I cannot get the dma on the harddrives to work - which doesn't make
it much good at serving files.

I've searched the Fedora list back to volume 8, to no avail. Googling
suggests that I need to recompile the kernel with support for the
chipset that my motherboard (ASUS K8S-MX) uses. Is recompiling the
kernel going to give me the option for this chipset? Different types of
drives (Maxtor 300G & Seagate 200G) do not appear to make any difference.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
