File Permissions and Compact Flash

I have taken photos off a Compact Flash card, modified them in Gimp and need
to get them back onto the
card to take to a photo processor. I am trying to drag the photos back into
the card but am denied.
I am logged in as mel.
The file owner is listed as mel.
However, the bottom of the permissions window reads "You are not the owner,
so you can't change these permissions"
Owner has Read, Write, and Execute permissions.
I tried using chmod to change permissions as mel and as root to see if it
would have an effect but the permissions
did not change.

What am I missing here?
