mv sources sources.rpmold
mv sources.rpmnew sources

This is what Paul meant. Customize the new FC3 sources file to contain
nearby mirror servers.

That is a different configuration file.

Place a # in front of "up2date default" in the sources file.
If course the yum.conf and yum.repos.d/*repos files do not influence
up2date in any way. That was stated here on the list many times.
