new kernel but doesn't show up in grub at system boot

Yeah, in the default layout it should be /etc/grub/grub.conf. Look in 
there to see if the kernel is listed. If you installed an RPM it should 
be there, if you built your own kernel from source you will probably 
need to add an entry for it.
