ACPI=off does not resolve the issue
ping -s 1500 works
iptables -list give
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

    have added to /etc/modprobe.conf
    alias net-pf-10 off

Sure sounds like iptables is up or you've got a problem moving larger
packets.
service iptables status says what?

What does ifconfig say about errors etc?
Try ping with the -s 1500 option to try moving a larger packet. Regular
ping is 58 bytes, and ftp connect is also small.

Also reboot with acpi=off as a boot option and see if like magic
everything works.
