I did the more newbie version:

1) downloaded the Thunderbird 1.0 rpm, but didn't do
anything with it yet.

2) did "rpm -e thunderbird" to get rid of Thunderbird
0.9.

3) then installed Thunderbird 1.0 with RPM.

It's obviously an incredibly unsophisticated way of
doing it, but it worked. All of my settings were saved
and Thunderbird 1.0 has worked perfectly.
