Nobody urges you to use more yum repositories than the Core and
updates-released. The unofficial FAQ only shows how to use yum with
additional repositories. Which you may use depend from your needs and
personal taste. Regarding compatibility due to mixing several
repositories there have been much of discussions here on the list.
Please search the archive if interested. Quality of packages and
security standards of third party repositories as well if Fedora Extras
is a different topic.
You don't have to enable other repositories all the time; see `man yum'.
So you can use i.e. freshrpms.net only from time to time to selective
install additional packages and by using yum you avoid the rpm
dependency problems.
