dvgrab error: /dev/raw1394

OK, so I figured I'd grab some video of our baby really quick. I had 1394 & 
dvgrab working fine on my old system, but it's been so long I have no clue 
how I did it. Hoping Fedora 3 is more idiot proof, I figured I'd try it out. 
No joy: dvgrab says "raw1394 - failed to get handle: No such file or 
directory"

lsmod shows all the right (I think) modules loaded:

dv1394                 24461  0
raw1394                36909  0
ohci1394               35033  1 dv1394
ieee1394              302869  3 dv1394,raw1394,ohci1394

Log entry shows /dev/raw1394 being created

Dec 28 09:19:22 minerva kernel: ieee1394: raw1394: /dev/raw1394 device 
initialized

But there's no /dev/raw1394! Is this some udev thing? Because I'm still 
completely at sea about that--I never even got up to speed on devfs, either. 
I was still using  statically created devices ...
