8-bit characters into console

Hi,

I am unable to get 8-bit charaters from the console.

This is independent of the font I load from /lib/kbd/consolefonts (I'm
using lat19w-16 because latercyrheb doesn't seem to like boldface which
I can't live without). I have LANG=LC_TYPE=C. mapscrn doesn't do
anything either. I can't find information in the Linux keyboard and
console howto.

I'm testing it with this:
$ python -c "for i in range(128, 256): print i,chr(i),"

But I can't get *any* output with 8-bit characters.
What am I doing wrong?
