The dot, although not posix comliant, is a common separator for the user and group with chown.
You can edit and recompile chown {in coreutils rpm}, and possibly useradd and adduser {in shadow-utils rpm} to not use dot as a
user/group separator.
I modified the utilities years ago but we decided not to allow
usernames with dots for cross platform compatablity reasons.
