Ok, but since mkinitrd is a requirement (in userland) to build an initrd
image prior to booting, why force lvm on all other non-lvm users just to
not inconvenience the few lvm users?  What you are describing is what
most of us call "Redhat Bloat".  It's the layering and layering of
needless dependencies on users who don't desire them.  

How long before 'rpm -q --whatrequires filesystem' equals 'rpm -qa' ? 
After all, everything resides on the filesystem. ;)
