I have a Canon BJC 2100.
I got it to print high quality black and white by changing the settings
in the "Gnome Print Manager/ Driver Options". I played with several
settings. I believe what worked was changing the Media type.
As you may be aware, the Windows drivers change to high quality only
when you tell it you have superior paper, so this is not a surprise.

Since I am printing only text from my Linux box, I also changed the
"output type" to Black and White.

Changing the "quality" parameter to a higher DPI did nothing.

YMMV
