Thanks for the help.  I'll give that a try.  Regarding the loopback, the default
route configuration for a fedora box includes
  Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
  127.0.0.0       *               255.0.0.0       U     0      0        0 lo

That means that 127.0.0.5 should go through the "lo" interface.   I confirmed that
by 
    telnet 127.0.0.5 22
and got back the ssh prompt for that box.....

Again, I'll give your suggestions a try.  Thanks for responding.
