Why do you say it's missing, are you sure your FC1 install is complete?

$ cat mysql.php
<? printf("%s\n", mysql_real_escape_string("'fish'")); ?>
$ php -f mysql.php
<br />
<b>Warning</b>:  mysql_real_escape_string(): Can't connect to local

<b>Warning</b>: mysql_real_escape_string(): A link to the server could

$ rpm -q php-mysql
php-mysql-4.3.4-1.1
