Robert: Some time ago I tried VariCAD (http://www.varicad.com) and found 
it highly capable, stable and easy to learn/use, it's not free but it's 
not expensive either. I've used AutoCAD in the past and found VariCAD 
much better in 3D. It is very easy to install and very low on resource 
consumption. You can get a trial version at no cost.
