The Linux version of Compupic is ancient and unmaintained (last release
was 3 1/2 years ago).

Incidentally, where did you get v5.3? I can only see v5.1 on their Linux
download page.

Updating and recompiling for modern kernels would help, but of course it's
a commercial (but no-cost ... for the Linux version) application, with no
available source to recompile.

You could try asking the developers to update it, but frankly if they
wanted to then they would have by now.

Normally in the case of commercial abandonware, I recommend moving to an
alternative OSS app but, like you, never having successfully managed to
run this app (the Linux version), I really don't know what it's range of
functionality is, and therefore can't give a comparison.

If you just want to view images, try gqview or gthumb.

I'll be starting work on a Fedora'ised RPM of MaPiVi soon, which is,
AFAIK, the only Linux app which supports IPTC editing (although there is a
Perl module and a development library), and therefore qualifies it as the
only Linux Image Management application available. I find that incredibly
sad, particularly as every Windoze-centic developer and his dog has jumped
onto the "digital-hub" bandwagon in the last year or so.

There is a cross-platform Image Viewer called XnView, but the Linux
version has vastly reduced functionality compared to the Windblows version
(e.g. no IPTC support).

Currently I have to run VMWare/XP/PixVue just to annotate my photos.

I'll be working with Martin over the next year to bring MaPiVi up to date,
and hopefully (are you reading this Martin?) include things like XML-based
annotations and MySQL support.

But to reiterate, Compupic is dead. They have dumped Linux, so I suggest
you reciprocate by dumping them.
