My humble advice is to try Alsa again and report any problems back on the
list.

First edit /etc/apt/sources.list as root, add these guys somewhere in it

rpm http://download.fedora.us/fedora fedora/1/i386 os updates stable
rpm-src http://download.fedora.us/fedora fedora/1/i386 os updates stable
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/1/i386 core updates freshrpms

Save it, and then as root

apt-get update

There'll be some to-ing and fro-ing, then you're back at the prompt. Now you
have apt ready to get your Alsa bits and pieces.

apt-get install alsa-driver alsa-lib gnome-alsamixer alsa-utils
kernel-module-alsa#1.0.0-0.rc2.1.fr_2.4.22_1.2129.nptl

That's all one line. You need to change the 2129 in the last part to your
kernel version, find out your kernel version with

uname -r

My memory is a bit hazy about the next parts, I don't remember if the RPM
script does it for you, but you may need to run

alsaconf

to get alsa to set up your /etc/modules.conf for you.

Lastly you need to run either

alsamixer

or

gnome-alsamixer

to unmute your card and set the volume.

Hope this helps get you started, remember to report back with issues.
