Answering my own post again to help future Googlers.... Seems the Xtrap stuff 
is ancient history / cruft, there is a newer Xtest interface which replaces 
it.

http://member.nifty.ne.jp/tsato/xvkbd  has a cool virtual keyboard which can 
also operate from the commandline to inject characters, thus solving the 
problem.  You will need the Xaw3d package to use xvkbd.
