gcc 3.x/Makefile problems: workaround needed

Can anyone tell me the best way to build a program using gcc 3.x when the program
must be compiled with gcc and linked with g++? I would like to be able to do
this without having to edit the Makefile and run make a second time.

Thanks,
PRINCE
