I think the difference is that you are probably running the gears
screensaver full screen, whereas the numbers that I gave above are from
glxgears running from a console, which is not full screen. If I run
gears full screen, showing the FPS, I am also getting around 50 FPS.

Here is a sampling of the output during glxgears from a console:

10226 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2045.200 FPS
10246 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2049.200 FPS
10230 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2046.000 FPS
10220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2044.000 FPS
10218 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2043.600 FPS
10157 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2031.400 FPS
10187 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2037.400 FPS

These numbers are about 50 - 75 FPS slower than what I first got after
starting X, before loading other apps. These numbers are with Evolution
and gmplayer running.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I am running the 2.4.22-1.2163.nptl
kernel.

HTH,

Marc
