Software raid 1 is also bootable. Each mirror, though part of a raid
1 array, also looks like a regualr partition, so the boot loader can
use it just fine.
Raid 1 is also faster for reading than a single disk, and no slower
for writing. (Assuming you put your disks on separate IDE controllers
so reads and writes cna be dispatched to each disk in parallel.)
