p4 and hyper-threading

Thank you for your help. I thought support for HT was added in
2.4.18...guess I was wrong. 

Built my own kernel based on the 2.4.24 tree and now it works.

The potential benefits of hyperthreading are -extremely- application 
dependent. That they do or don't help for one person or application has 
pretty much zero bearing on their utility for another.
