Kernel 2.6 panic

I tried to install the 2.6 kernel according to the instructions in the
following post:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2003-December/msg04465.html
I am using the 2.6.0-1.21 kernel from
http://people.redhat.com/davej/FedoraCore2/
The RPM would not install properly since mkinitrd failed on the
ncr53c8xx module. I removed the ncr53c8xx line from /etc/modules.conf
and the RPM installed. I am using the ncr53c810 card just for a CR-ROM
and a ZIP-drive, so it is no big deal if those wouldn't work.
However, when I boot the new kernel, it quickly panics. Here is the
output (written with a pen on paper, so there might be some typos):
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKE] (IRQs 3 4 *5 6 7 10 11 12 14 15)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKF] (IRQs 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 12 14 15)

<0>Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init!
My computer is a 2.6 GHz P4 on an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe with 1 GB of
ECC-RAM. The video card is an ATI 9800 nonpro.
The above trace is from the smp kernel, but even the up one panics.
Just in case anyone is interested. :-)
