machine stops on booting

Did you recently update your kernel?  I've had similar problems after 
running up2date and booting a new kernel.  LILO or GRUB allowed me to 
boot from an older kernel to resolve.  I then modified the config file 
to boot from the previous kernel rather than the one just downloaded.
