Switching from run level 5 to 3 hangs

The difference between runlevel 5 and 3 is that in runlevel 3 there is no X
server ( the
graphical UI thing on VT7 ) running, while in 5 , there is one running.
That is the only difference.


On your question how mingetty survives kill -9, it does not. It dies and
then the init
process starts a new "copy" of it.
