fatal RPM install error

While trying to run up2date just for the kernal, during installation I 
get this message:
There was a fatal RPM install error. The message was:
There was a rpm unpack error  installing the package: 
kernel-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl

What should I do now?  I have just installed the Core-1 CD's I 
downloaded from the website in December, to a PC.  I'm a newbie to 
linux, but used to do work in unix many years ago.
