If it is showing in the yum.log (which up2date doesn't use) then yum must
have done it.  Just for the record yum and up2date don't share anything
except the ability to use the same repos.

Do you have the yum service running?

$ /sbin/chkconfig --list yum
$ /sbin/service yum status
