The initial post concerned pctel 0.9.7-9 driver on Fedora.

Mathew Saltzman recommended the slmodem driver, and he is 
probably correct. This is path which should also work in FC2

However, the pctel driver will work under Kernel 2.4 if you
just replace "tty->count" with "(tty->count).counter"

  The tty struct has been redefined in the Fedora kernel.
