installing grub fails

Bottom post, guys, please!

grub-install uses Linux device names (/dev/hda, etc.), NOT BIOS names
(hd0,0).  grub uses BIOS names internally.

No, that will install it to the partition, not the MBR.

The error message indicates that the BIOS doesn't know about the drive.
This IS an IDE drive, isn't it?  We'd need to see your drive layout to
better answer this.
