If your experience is with gmane.org, you will find a detailed
explanation what is necessary to send messages through their system on
their website. It is an anti-spam protection.

If you use mail to read the list you should use an IMAP server and thus
just downloading of those emails you want to read or you even want to
reply to. A client only fetches the mail header info from the IMAP
server while a client connected to a POP3 server always has to fetch the
whole message.
