fedora won't see zip drive

 I've tried both an internal and an external usb zip drive.
When I try to mount the drive, I get a message that it can't mount the
drive. I click on the details button and this is the message I get.

/dev/hdd4: Input/output error

Any ideas on how to fix this ?
