Soundcard sometimes works. Sometimes Not.

Not enough details. Is this with GNOME or KDE? If it is KDE, do you have
KDE's sound server enabled (Menu > Control Centre > Sound & Multimedia >
Sound System)? Which audio output driver do you have configured in XMMS'
preferences?
