I really wonder why people still use /boot partitions when they have a small 
root (/) partition.

My prefered layout is
/ 500M
/2 500M (alternate root for testing/upgrading)

everything else on LVM
/usr 5-6G
/var 1G
/tmp 1G
/home - what one needs
/opt
/usr/local - if you use it much
