Choose any of your user accounts and "login with wrong password", means don't login because you
with intention give the login process a wrong password. You will get
following output:

1) $ faillog
user   error    maximum  last
accountname           1        0  Do Jul 29 22:54:34 +0200 2004 an
unknown

2) $ pam_tally
User accountname    (510)   has 1

If the configured maximum is reached - in my given patch it was 3 - you
won't be able to login with the account even with the correct password.
As long as below the limit a correct login will reset the error count.

"man 5 faillog" and "man 8 faillog" or "faillog -h" for more infos
"pam_tally -h" for parameters
