If you this type of error when gpilotd crashes :
(process:6384): GLib-CRITICAL (recursed) **: file gstring.c: line 672
(g_string_erase): assertion `pos >= 0' failed
aborting...
it's a glib2 problem and you can a patch here :

I found this in the gnome-pilot-list and it works fine for me.
