grub is gone

Where did you install grub to when you initially installed linux? Do you 
install on sda or sdd? Give us some more details and we might be able to 
help out a bit more.

p.s. rescue mode on you CD1 can get you to a shell that will let you 
chroot into your system (if that means anything to you ...)
