problems with the ln command

At the risk of sounding patronizing, is it possible that the unexpected
symlink is the result of a previous ln attempt gone awry? What are the
creation dates on the two symlinks? If you delete both symlinks and re-issue 
the command, are you able to reproduce the problem?
