Right click the mouse on the desktop. Choose open terminal. Then type 
gnome-terminal &

I used to have to do this trick with ximian way back when RHL 7.x 
series. You might have to type nautilus &
This should work, if things are similar to how ximian and the crashing 
panel worked for me.

I'm not sure if oaf-slay is still available to kill off defunct 
programs. This command/script used to correct a lot of problems.
