REPOST: Setting console

When I set a vga= mode in my grub.conf file, the system boots up with it 
and I can tell it what mode I want, however when it runs rc.sysinit, it 
gets overridden again.  Other than removing the setsysfont line from 
rc.sysinit, is there a proper way I should be doing this? I'd like to 
run the console at 80x43 or 80x50, as opposed to the default 80x25...
