ac97 sound problems

Ive just installed core 2 onto my laptop. Everything works fine, except 
sound. My sound appears to have been detected, but when i try and play a 
sound it repeats each cord many times. So a sound is produced, but a 
single 'ding' sound will go on for over a minute before stopping.

The only errors I can see in message are:

modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1

which appears twice.

Any pointers to look at to try and fix this?
