sound stopped working

Try this:
ls -l /usr/bin/artswrapper = -rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 5700 Oct 23  2003 /

As root # chmod 6755 /usr/bin/artswrapper
gives artswrapper setuid root and should cure your artsd.

   david
