odd gnome-panel problem

I got hit by an odd gnome-panel problem and was wondering if anyone had
seen this before or has a solution for it. The gnome-panel no longer
seems to allow applications to embed themselves. For example, starting
rhythmbox or the cd player doesn't create an icon on the left side of
the panel that lets you control the app.

This started after I got some error messages about applets not being
able to initialize and asking me whether I wanted to remove them.
However, I've rebooted the my system since then and haven't seen the
error message again.
