OT: Realtek 8139 hangs after dhcp at startup

I have had startup issues with Comcast also. Try these;

1) Do you have a firewall and does it listen for a specific DHCP server.

2) Are you sure that the modem/Comcast server recognizes your NIC as a
valid client (unplug your modem for about 2-5 minutes to reset the
connection).  

3) Let your system sit "hung" for 3 minutes if it is a server/client
problem init will time out and continue.

4) What does ifconfig say about the NIC after startup?
