Desktop icons disappear in Gnome 2.6

FIXED:

I ran $nautilus & and it disappeared once, displayed my icons, and
then came back.  After closing nautilus, I logged out to verify they
would still be there - yes.  Looks like life is good again.  Thanks
for your help.
