I would surmise as well.  Could md5sum be generating a checksum for the
symbolic link instead of the target? (I'm not too familiar with the
inner workings of md5sum personally).

The freshrpms list is getting posts of a similar nature.  It would
appear that Dag's site is being updated or overloaded and is timing out.
