FC2 install corrupts MBR

I have been trying to set up a dual boot between WinXP and FC2.
I have added a hard drive for linux that is on a different IDE controller than
my other drives.
When I tried to install FC2, I got an error message saying that it could not
mount /dev/hde2 as / because it is not formatted.
I am using all the right settings and telling disk druid to create and format
the partitions on the new drive. Everything looks ok until it starts to copy
files, when I get the error.
Furthermore, my XP installation will not boot. I get an error message that is
from the bootloader in the MBR. My partitions are intact, but something is
amiss.
I have been telling anaconda to load GRUB on the first sector of the boot
partition, not any MBR.

How is the FC2 install even writing a single byte to my XP hard drive?
